Words of The Week 4

Words of The Week is a list of words I have learned throughout the week. It helps me keep track of my expanding vocabulary and teaches us all something new.

Irremediable – Impossible to cure or put right.

“The danger of cliff diving is irremediable.”

Menagerie – A collection of wild animals kept in captivity for entertainment or for studying. Sometimes refers to a varied group of things.

“I love events with a menagerie of passionate, authentic people.”

Espy – To catch’s glimpse of something from a distance, often unexpectedly.

“I espy with my little eye, you preparing to send me money.”

Biophilia – The instinctive human tendency to interact with nature. It literally translates to “love of life.”

Biophilia is the reason I’m drawn to flowers, insects, and trees.”

Calvinistic – The theology of John Calvin that emphasizes the irresistibility of grace, justification by faith, and doctrines of predestination.

Calvinistic is so oddly specific, I don’t even have an example for it.”

Draconian – Excessively harsh rules, laws, or actions.

“Robbing your ex is a draconian measure. But I might approve.”

Stalactites – Icicle-shaped mineral deposits that hang downward from the roof or side of a cave.

Stalactites of ice are called ‘icicles,’ and you shouldn’t touch ‘em.”

Theological – The study of God, religions, and faith-based reasoning.

“I am the descendant of a woman with a theological degree. #Boom.”

Sublime – Something so grand or beautiful that it inspired deep emotion or admiration.

“I find a sublime beauty in The Muppets and puppeteering.”

Epistemology – The branch of philosophy that focuses on the nature, origin, scope, and limits of human knowledge. Basically, how we know all we know.

“Consider the epistemological aspects of social media posts you read.”

Elusive – Something difficult to find, catch, or achieve.

“Racism is expensive, and that fact remains elusive to many imbeciles.”

Post-Human – This is a philosophical concept that explores what the world would be like if it wasn’t such a human-centered world. It concerns a technologically advanced future blurring the differences between human, nature, and machine.

“The ‘Tenet (2020)’ movie could be seen as a posthuman sci-fi film.”

Monotropism – A narrow range of attention or focus on a small number of interests. This often happens when neurodivergent folks have special interests they hyperfocus on.

Monotropism is like tunnel vision but of the mind, not the sight.

Avowed – A person’s publicly stated stance, admission, or acknowledgment.

“I avowed to get my Associates of Science and did. #Baboom.”

Sustenance – Nourishment, food for strength. It can also mean the maintaining of something in existence.

“The bigger bodies at Playtime Co. need sustenance to survive.”

Invariances – Remaining unchanged regardless of the conditions.

“These heauxs keep trying me, but the results show invariance.”

Ecocide – Unlawful maliciously or recklessly acts committed that knowingly harm the environment.

“Destroying the Amazon Rainforest would be a form of ecocide.”

Anthropogenic – Environmental impacts created by human impact.

“Many animal species and plants die out due to anthropogenic causes.”
