Words of The Week is a list of words I have learned throughout the week. It helps me keep track of my expanding vocabulary and teaches us all something new.
This week’s edition will also include common phrases I have learned or like.

“Oligopoly” – This is a market structure where the industry is dominated by few entities. This leads to less competition and higher pricing.
“I’m not sure why this is legal. Apple (iPhones) is an oligopoly.”
Moonglade – The path of the moonlight on water.
“Moonglades are so pretty, I hope to see one in person someday.”
Cheongsam – Pronounced like “chong-sahm” and also known as “qipao,” this is a traditional, form-fitting Chinese dress. They’re recognizable for their high collar, asymmetrical crossover lapel, and a slit skirt.
“I’ve never seen an ugly cheongsam, they’re so elegantly beautiful.”
Anguish – Severe mental or physical pain, or extreme unhappiness. It’s an all-encompassing feeling, almost suffocating.
“He watched in anguish as I began to blast my Monaleo playlist.”
Impetuous – Someone who acts quickly or on a whim without consideration of consequences.
“Your mother made an impetuous decision to have you.”
Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor (SNRI) – SNRIs are medications that stop the brain from absorbing certain chemicals too quickly, improving communication between nerve cells and stabilizing your mood.
“SNRIs treat anxiety disorders, depression, and chronic pain.”

Supernormal Stimulus – An exaggerated, artificial version of a natural trigger that creates a stronger than normal reaction.
“Exposure to porn can create supernormal stimulus in adolescents.”
Genesis – The origin or creation of something, often in reference to the bible.
“I don’t yet understand the genesis of cyclosporiasis.”
Adventitious – Coming from an outside place, something accidental, or appearing in an unusual place.
“My deez nuts jokes were not adventitious, they were planned already.”
Ergonomically – Designing or arranging things so people can use them efficiently and safely.
“My desk chair is designed ergonomically to fit my phat dump trunk,”
Cantus – This is my favorite character on Fraggle Rock. Outside of this guy, the word means “song”. In a more musical context, it is the top melody in choral music.
“They sang a traditional cantus in unison, then sang WAP.”
Panache – A flamboyant or confident way of doing things that makes people admire you.
“He walked with panache until he saw DoodleBob enter the room.”
Typologically – This is the classification of structures, characteristics, and more.
“Classifying things too typologically is why Salem thought there were so many witches.”
Cogent – Something that describes someone clear, logical and persuasive.
“She gave a cogent reason as to how bombs contributed to global warming.”
