Words of The Week is a list of words I have learned throughout the week. It helps me keep track of my expanding vocabulary and teaches us all something new!
Most of this week’s entries are from a book called The Word for World is Forest. It’s a fascinating dystopian novel with critiques on colonization, racism, misogyny, and patriarchy. I highly suggest it, as it gives such great food for thought. Anyways, enjoy!
Irremediable – Impossible to cure or put right.
“The danger of cliff diving is irremediable.”
Sonorous – Imposingly deep and full (sound).
“This dump trunk I’m carrying has a sonorous boom when I walk.”
Comradeship – The company, friendship, or shared loyalty between people, often developed from working or having shared challenges together.
“He said he’s no cheater, he just felt the spirit of comradeship in her bed.
Furtive – Actions done in a sly or secretive manner avoid detection. It implies a “cautious” stealthiness.
“I was furtive when stealing snacks from my brother.”
Taoism – An ancient Chinese philosophy and religion that emphasizes living in harmony with the “Tao” (the “way”), or the natural flow of the universe. Practices including meditation, breathing exercises, and ethical living.
“There are many different branches of Taoism.”
Ensnared – To be caught or trapped in a physical or figurative trap.
“That heaux was ensnared in a web of the lies she tells herself.”
Polytheistic – The belief or worship in multiple gods and goddesses.
“Polytheistic and still can’ t get no girl.”
Sophomoric – Pretentious, overconfident behavior yet simultaneously immature and poorly informed.
“I can’t stand his ass, he so sophomoric.”
Animism – The belief that all natural things (animals, plants, rivers, etc.) possess a spiritual soul or sort of consciousness.
“Worship plants with animism, don’t worship celebrities.”
Incorrigible – A person or habit incapable of being reformed or improved.
“You cannot heal incorrigible people who refuse to listen.”
Epicracy – Getting pleasure or satisfaction from the pain or misfortunes of others.
“Racism has an unspoken element of epicracy.”
