Words of The Week is a list of words I have learned throughout the week. It helps me keep track of my expanding vocabulary and teaches us all something new.

Most of this week’s words were learned from binge watching The Twilight Zone (1959), so if you’re a fan of the show, you might recognize a few of these terms. Enjoy!

Idiosyncratic – Peculiar or unique to a specific individual.

“I have some idiosyncratic habits, but you’ll never know them.”

Anachronistic – Something appearing in the wrong historical period, something outdated.

“Nokias in 2026 seem anachronistic, but also ugly.”

Prodrome – One or more symptoms that indicate the onset of an illness or disease. In crisis communication, they are considered red flags or warning signs. Used often in crisis communication.

“Men are centered during the prodome stage of dumb heaux syndrome.”

Trollop – A term used in the early 17th century to describe a woman who has many sexual encounters or relationships. Possibly, even a prostitute (derogatory).

“Yo mama look like a trollop.”

Euphemism – Mild, indirect, or polite expression substituted for a more offensive or blunt expression. It’s often used to discuss more sensitive topics like sex, death, pregnancy, appearance, etc.

“She used a euphemism instead of calling him a heaux.”

Firmament – This is a literary term for the sky, the heavens, or the arching dome visible only above the Earth. It signifies celestial realm or a metaphorically specialized field or sphere of interest.

“Light pollution dims visibility of stars in the firmament.”

Celluloid – A thermoplastic compound created primarily to make photographic film, dolls, jewelry, buttons, and other items as one of the first synthetic plastics. It is no longer used due to high flammability and expensive production.

“Celluloid is ‘notoriously combustible’, unlike me.”

Colloquially – An informal, casual manner of speaking rather than an academic one.

“The word colloquially has too many Ls.”

Primadonna – The leading singer in an opera company. Colloquially, it describes a temperamental or arrogant person who demands special treatment with entitlement. It’s similar to the popular term “diva.”

“Primadonna girl, yeah, all I ever wanted was the world.”

Solemnity – A deep state of seriousness and formality.

“There’s a time for humor and a time for solemnity.”

Tourniquet – A medical device wrapped tightly around an arm or leg to stop venous bleeding.

“She applied a tourniquet after lighting his ass up like a firework.”

Inconspicuous – Not clearly visible or attracting attention.

“With this face card, I cannot remain inconspicuous in a crowd.”

Alterity – The state of being different, the otherness.

“Countries have their own ultimate alterities.”
